The Nine Currents
The Spiritual Path of Light, A Conscious Cultivation
The Appetizer
Greetings Voyagers,
I’m happy to report I finally had a day off away from my massage table and computer, and am feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Pele just finished erupting in Halema’uma’u. Vog (volcanic fog) is pouring down the slopes of Mauna Loa, but down at the shore, I spent several glorious hours basking in the light. I swam, which to me feels like flying, watched a fellow flyer, an eagle ray snuffle, along the bottom kicking up coral dust, danced with the yellow tangs, tracked needlefish, and searched for cowries. I found one larger than my hand, well-protected in a reef nook by a large, spiked vana (sea urchin). Most likely the mollusk was alive in the shell. Even though I would love a shell to take home, I was delighted to find one with its mantle pulled in, its gleaming, speckled shell totally exposed. No octopus was going to be able to reach its tentacles into that nook to crush its shell with that vana protecting it!
Anyway, this day got me thinking about light, and how important relaxation is. Ironically, I spent a lot more time in natural light before I lived in Hawai’i. Almost all my jobs on Block Island over 25 plus years working there were outdoors, even in winter. I cleared brush, pulled weeds, built and repaired stone walls, worked on a bee and oyster farm, foraged seaweed, painted houses, and gave aquatic bodywork sessions in nature. Now I spend most of my days inside, sometimes in a room without windows, offering bodywork. I need more light! And relaxation.
I know, to some, it didn’t look like I was doing much with my life those Block Island years where I worked the land, and to be honest, spent a lot of time loafing on the beach, but I know I was being initiated by light.
It took me years to understand this, and years more to develop this knowing into a coherent pattern and practice that I offer now as a way to navigate the Coracle.
I share this path today, with gratitude for all the light I’ve received, and my necessary time in the dark. I know I will continue to travel back and forth for as long as I’m here on Earth, but today, I offer my testimony to the power of light as a spiritual path that can be consciously cultivated, that is free, and that will move through you in the Nine Currents I describe here, just because you live under the sun.
The second journey of the Coracle will drop in two weeks. Please reach out if you have any revelations (Current 1) or reflections (Current 2) you’d like to share. And remember, I am available for private sessions. Reply to this email to schedule.
I am offering the Coracle for free. If you are moved by the work, please consider making a donation and sharing this journey with your communities. A free subscription to the Corpus Callosum Chronicles will ensure you get every journey in your inbox, so make sure you’re signed up. If you’d like to support this work on a regular basis, paid subscriptions will do that. Also, you can also listen to the Coracle on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
The Main Course
The Nine Currents are a path I developed inspired by the Nine Properties of Light as shared with me by Mū Hawaiian lineage carrier, Ke’oni Hanalei, of Pōhala Hawaiian Botanicals.
I took each of the properties of light and formed them into questions to help you understand how the story is moving through you and informing you about yourself and your relationship to light itself as the manifestation of creation.(Versus dark as the metaphorical signifier of uncreation. I also want to note that I value both, and have great reverence for the primacy of darkness as the foundation of all we see with our eyes through light.)
Because they are currents, they will move you where you need to go, and because you are in a coracle, you will need to learn to paddle and navigate. The Nine Currents could serve as journaling prompts or tools for contemplation.
The Nine Currents
1.The Current of Revelation: What does this story reveal to me about myself, others, or the world? Am I available for the disclosure? Am I hiding? If I am hiding, do I consent to exploring why and commit to the disclosure?
2. The Current of Reflection: How does this story expose my vulnerabilities? Am I available to be exposed? Where am I lying to myself or others?
3. The Current of Refraction: How does the story move me physically? What is it quickening in me? Where am I stagnating?
4. The Current of Diffraction: How can this story help me respond and adapt to the challenges it presents to to my ego and psyche? Am I willing to live with the consequences if I don’t adapt when called? How can I continue evolve when fears arise?
5. The Current of Interference: What am I resisting in the story? How can I work with what I’m resisting, instead of flowing with it? How can I overcome self-sabotage?
6. The Current of Polarization: What choice or choices is the story asking me to make? Where do I need to focus? Where have I been noncommittal to something I really care about? Do I consent to exploring that, with myself or others?
7. The Current of Dispersion: What must I do, or who must I be, in order to transform, now that I have received answers to the previous questions? Where or why do I refuse to change? Where am I refusing my own power and agency?
8. The Current of Scattering: What do I need to do in order to let others know I’ve changed? What gifts can I now share? Where am I withholding?
9. The Current of Completion: What am I now ready to release and completely let go? Am I still holding onto something that I want to release? How can I acknowledge I have completed this journey and move into the world in a new form?
